Culturally Responsive Classrooms

The S.A.N.K.O.F.A model of instruction is a research-based approach to teaching that integrates aspects of culture and language into the learning process. S.A.N.K.O.F.A creates learning environments that affirm and values students’ cultural background to create connections, which promote academic excellence for diverse learners.

S.A.N.K.O.F.A classes emphasize the value of all cultures, with a focus on African-American culture, historical perspectives and learning styles. Cultural Responsive teaching provides a framework for this instructional model. This approach has been proven to increase academic achievement and closes the achievement gap.

Students in these classes are taught California Standards using District and state approved curriculum. S.A.N.K.O.F.A classes are open to all students meeting the entry criteria, and those who would benefit from deliberate instructional approaches that support inductive learning in an interactive and collaborative instructional model.
